Haven House provides an Emergency Service for homeless women and children and single women suffering problems arising from domestic violence, drug and alcohol addiction or mental ill health. Some are trying to cope with the repercussions on the relationships with their children. High levels of motivation exist despite some feeling low self esteem. The building is designed to help residents in a ‘process of recovery and progression’.

In responding to the brief, the scheme has developed a womblike quality with its’ strong and robust outer edge protecting and nurturing an inner development and growth. Designed over two floors the building creates a strong perimeter edge and a series of sheltered courtyards. Defined thresholds create a sequence of spaces, public to private, offering the residents choice around their levels of interaction or engagement.
