Reeves Day Surgery Facility
“The Reeves Day Surgery facility is a 4378m² day surgery facility at Tallaght University Hospital. The facility was designed to comply with the HBN 10-02: Day Surgery Facility document. It consists of 4 operating theatres, full reception, admissions dept, along with a 20 bed, 2 stage recovery dept and all ancillary accommodation. The facility was constructed in an existing building which had been originally designed and constructed to be 5 different retail units over multiple levels. These levels all had to be taken into consideration when establishing the patient flow through the facility. The service aspect of the design required the construction of a mezzanine floor level over the theatres to accommodate the mechanical and electrical services and equipment. The site traversing over many levels proved to be complex for the design layout to ensure accessibility for all was maintained for both patients and staff while still allowing a natural patient flow from reception right through to recovery and back to reception for exiting.
The Reeves site had many physical constraints within the site boundaries with residential housing overhead, a car park below, and a public street directly abutting the site. Thus, careful co-ordination of services and their transit either outside or inside the building was required. Careful consideration in the specification of finishes was used, to ensure that cleaning and maintenance regimes already established in TUH could also be used in the new building. The interior schemes, the colours and materials were presented to the hospital staff. Hardwearing and durable, the client wished for the new surgery to have its own identity & palette”
